OUR HISTORY...How the SOPERS Came to Be and Why We Have Our Rules
By Melissa
Leather and I met on another board in early 2009. I was in a place of being stuck. I'd been stuck for almost a full year!! I was so bummed. Leather emailed me March 5, 2009 and asked if I wanted help. I thought about it and March 6 I said "Where do I sign up - I'm in."
Leather said to try it her way for 2 weeks and if it didn't work I could stop 'our plan' and do what I needed to after that. No problem. 2 weeks?! Easy right?! I had a list of rules to follow (very similar to our SOP rules, but a little different) even more strict. Yes, more strict. I'd been stuck between 185-183 lbs for almost a year and i was tired of being stuck. What could 2 weeks do?
Well, we had a challenge on the other board and Leather and I started this during about week 4. Magically :-) with the new rules started the weight started to fall off... I won the challenge week 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9... then the challenge was called off and I was proclaimed queen of that particular challenge.
It was awesome! Down to the 170s within a month. I made my WW goal in that month, then in another 6 weeks (beginning of May 09) made my lifetime with WW. I had NEVER BEEN BELOW 170 EVER!!! but i wanted to keep going. I was SO excited with the results. And I also had made a fabulous friend, Leather - who i still thank for reaching out her hand to help me. We've become great friends and our friendship means a lot to me. = )
The weight just kept going down. I was able to stay 56 days SOP which is still my personal record, which was beaten by our fave McSpotty! I went back to the email that Leather originally sent to me almost a year ago (because I STILL have a copy of it in my purse) that I need to look at once in a while to remind myself that this CAN be done and WILL be done. I also remind myself of how far I have truly come.
We started this thread on April 20, 2009 - to find others that were wanting to be more serious about their weight loss as well and get off the weight loss yo-yo.
NOW-- look at this amazing board... and all the amazing people that we have come to know and share friendships and similar stories of our weight loss challenges.

In 2009 I was reading the "Out Of Control" thread for a long long time. Don't know how I got there in the first place tho! I joined one thread because I liked their healthy ideas and that's where Melissa, Tazzie and I met each other.
After a while I felt that that 'healthy' thread wasn't really serious about losing and that they were not honest with themselves. I had been following the SOP 'rules' as my own rules to lose and I shared the rules with them, but they wanted to 'tweak' them to fit their own plans. I knew that wouldn't work. That's what they had been doing and they were not losing. I was frustrated, as was MELISSA, watching people talk talk talk and not lose--people we cared about on that thread.
Following my own version of the 'SOPER' rules, I had gone from 140 to 114 pounds in nine months. Melissa was also on that first thread. I shared my 'rules' with her and we started emailing and she followed the rules, and Melissa's weight started dropping like a rock!
So Melissa and I decided to start a new thread centered around the 'rules' and we named it "Seriously On Plan" because that was a phrase we had always used when we meant get with it, no joke, no bs, and just freakin do it. SOP! I used to write it on my hand!
MELISSA added some rules of her own to the list and we worked and re-worked the intro. She started the very first thread April 20, 2009. TAZZIE came with us as founding members of the sopers thread and here we are....the main rules were to plan your menu based on your DAILY POINTS ONLY, to eat what you plan, to eat only daily points and to cut off all eating at least 3 hrs before bedtime. They are rules because they work to bring about weight loss!
Some of us found that if we ate our weeklies or didn't cut off early we would GAIN - not lose weight or lose so slowly it was not worth the 'tweaking.' And some of us found that using weeklies was just an excuse for making unhealthy choices or even binge type eating, and that was not what we wanted to do! And some of us fought and kicked against the cut off early rule :-)
Now the SOPERS are the greatest bunch of women anyone could have the honor of being a part of.
We got just what we wanted when we started this thread...honest, funny, happy, losers who are serious about what we are doing here...even when we fail, fall, binge, overeat, undereat. Whatever. We are loving and honest and we make progress....that's us...the SOPERS!
