Kikki - Keeks
January 5, 2011
Hi, I’m Katie, or Kathleen, or Kikki, or Kathy, depending on what family or friend has decided to nick name me! I’m 100% Irish, with my Mom born in Blackrock and all of my grandparents from Ireland. I am the oldest of six kids. My Dad was in the military, so I grew up bouncing from military base to military base, never in one place more than 3 years. I went to 14 different schools, all told. It’s a wonder I stayed in nursing school long enough to meet my husband Joe! But I did, and we’ve known each other since we were 18.
I’ve been a nurse for 36 years, and married for 34. I am the director of the education department at my hospital now, after many years at the bedside in labor and delivery. I love teaching and encouraging nurses to continue their professional growth. I also teach graduate courses on line in Legal and Ethical issues in health care. I am a budding runner, with my husband, and have come to seriously love sweating when exercising! I have one son, Joey, 27. He was married 2 years ago, but no children yet. With my husband’s career, we’ve also moved frequently. I’ve been in Houston now for nine years. Our dream is to move to the Outer Banks of NC, and be where we really want to be, and work around that. We are currently working on designing a house to build there. Sometimes I feel like that dream will never come true!
But I know dreams do come true if you work hard enough at them. Around the time my son was 10, I hit my all time high of 160. For me, it just was not healthy. I’ve struggled with a healthy weight pretty much since Joey was born, kind of balanced out in the high 130’s-low 140’s. I joined WW in July of 2007, and never really took it seriously. Oh, I’d make some head way, but always with the thought that, oh, good, now I’ve lost ten pounds, I can eat what I want again. Finally, after continuing to fritter my hard earned money away, and realizing that as the 57th birthday stares me down, I decided to go on to the threads on WW. I have never, ever participated in chat rooms of any kind, but as so many of you attest, the Seriously On Plan thread practically reached out and hauled me in. I lurked for maybe 3 days, and then officially posted January 5, 2011. Cut off-hard; actually making a plan EVERY day and sticking to it-Harder. Heck, just committing to posting was Hard! But week by week, the weight came off. I finally made goal in April of 2011, and Lifetime six weeks later.
I cannot imagine not being a presence on the thread, and joining in the lives of these 40 some women. We share so much more than our daily menus-it’s through the parts of our lives that we share that we see the influences and the struggles we all have. We reach out to support and love each other in our personal challenges with weight. I owe this success to Leather and her committed band of veterans, and the joy and enthusiasm from all of the sisters-in-SOP.
